Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has urged MIKTA member countries to take concrete measures to help restore global peace, which continues to be undermined by ongoing armed conflicts, including in Palestine.

"At this rate, the humanitarian consequences arising from conflicts in Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, Yemen, and other parts of the globe have drawn the world's attention," she remarked in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.

Maharani raised the concern during the 11th MIKTA Speakers' Consultation forum, which brought together parliamentary leaders from Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkiye, and Australia.

She observed that the current world order is increasingly characterized by intensifying superpower rivalries and the growing use of force in international relations, leaving little room for restraint and dialogue.

According to her, such conditions have further worsened humanitarian situations and heightened the risk of conflict escalations.

On that note, the DPR leader invited MIKTA countries to strengthen crisis management mechanisms and rebuild mutual trust among nations.

"This reality has reminded us of the urgency to pursue de-escalation and credible dialogue as a priority, not as the last resort taken when it is already too late," she affirmed.

The Indonesian delegate noted that although parliaments do not directly control peace processes, they have the capacity to play a strategic role in translating commitments into legal instruments, budgetary support, and effective oversight.

She then underscored the importance of ensuring that humanitarian assistance in conflict zones remains impartial and free from any political, economic, or military interests.

Maharani emphasized that aid distribution should always be proportional, based on approval from the receiving countries, and carried out with full respect for their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"It is crucial that MIKTA parliaments align their steps. We must continue to advocate for uninterrupted humanitarian assistance while rejecting any attempt to weaponize it," she concluded.
