Belém, Brazil (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UK Minister for Nature Mary Creagh on Monday to strengthen bilateral efforts to reduce plastic pollution and improve environmental management.

“This MoU strengthens the collaboration we have undertaken. Among other initiatives, we will push for plastic waste reduction and commit to handling peatland management,” Nurofiq said during a bilateral meeting at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém.

The agreement also covers environmental governance, including legislation, regulation, monitoring, law enforcement, and planning. Both countries will cooperate on biodiversity conservation and pollution management.

At COP30, Indonesia is pursuing multiple bilateral discussions to accelerate practical climate action amid the challenges of reaching consensus in multilateral negotiations.

“We will pursue as many bilateral discussions as possible because we know that reaching agreements at the negotiation table is not easy. But we will not wait for consensus among all countries. We will take steps through practical cooperation,” Nurofiq said.

Beyond the UK, Nurofiq met with representatives from the global research organization World Resources Institute (WRI) to establish collaboration on deforestation and broader environmental management.

“Not only with countries, we also collaborate with international agencies. This morning we established cooperation for environmental management, especially on deforestation and other environmental efforts. We are opening the door widely to all parties that can collaborate with us,” he added.

The MoU reflects Indonesia’s commitment to deepen joint efforts on environmental sustainability and climate action, showcasing the country’s proactive approach to international partnerships at COP30.

Nurofiq also reaffirmed Indonesia’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, emphasizing steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

“This agreement marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable development,” he said.
