Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of social forestry, Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) as key pillars of climate action in the ASEAN region.

The statement was delivered by the Director of Tenurial Conflict Resolution and Indigenous Forests at the Ministry of Forestry, Julmansyah, during a Social Forestry Talk Show at the ASEAN Pavilion at COP30 in Belem, Brazil.

In a statement received here on Wednesday, he underlined the importance of forests in ASEAN as foundations of life, culture, and climate mitigation.

ASEAN member states have placed forests at the center of their climate strategies, further reflected in more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and regional initiatives.

The region is home to more than 206 million hectares of forests, accounting for nearly half of ASEAN’s land area.

One highlighted achievement is the finalization of guidelines and tools for implementing NbS and EbA in sustainable forest management and social forestry.

Developed by the ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry, the ASEAN Working Group on Forest Climate Change, UN-REDD, and partners, the guidelines provide science-based, community-centered direction to ensure long-term sustainability.

Representing ASEAN at COP30, Julmansyah conveyed the region’s joint position, emphasizing the need for sustainable and predictable climate finance to support forest protection, restoration, and sustainable management under NDCs.

He also stressed the importance of enhanced capacity-building to strengthen technical and institutional systems for MRV, carbon accounting, and transparent reporting under the Enhanced Transparency Framework.

He reaffirmed ASEAN’s unity in positioning forests, social forestry, and NbS/EbA as pillars of climate action, expressing confidence that shared efforts can secure the region’s climate future.
