Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology is working to simplify administrative procedures for Indonesian diaspora PhD holders who wish to become academics in Indonesia, either as lecturers or adjunct professors.

Deputy Minister Stella Christie said the simple steps aim to connect domestic academics with international-level research experiences and topics through collaboration with diaspora PhDs.

“We believe it is important for our diaspora to contribute, so it should be easy for them to work in Indonesia as adjunct professors. For example, if a diaspora member wants to teach here, the administrative process should be simplified,” she said on Friday.

On that occasion, she attended the third day of the Indonesian Higher Education Summit (KPPTI) at the Surabaya State University (Unesa), East Java.

The easier administrative process includes recognition of foreign-earned doctoral degrees, enabling quicker acknowledgment across domestic universities, since the equivalency process is managed by the ministry.

Additionally, diaspora PhDs can utilize ministry research funds to conduct joint research with domestic doctoral students in overseas laboratories.

“It also ensures that those returning with PhDs from overseas can have their degrees recognized quickly, enabling them to work as full lecturers in Indonesia,” she added.

Previously, on Wednesday (November 19), Minister Brian Yuliarto introduced plans for a double affiliation rule, allowing lecturers to collaborate with Indonesian diaspora in various academic activities.

“We are drafting a regulation so the diaspora can hold double affiliations with your universities,” he said.

He noted that over a thousand Indonesian diaspora are spread across multiple countries.

Yuliarto invited domestic lecturers to recruit them as doctoral student supervisors, research partners, industry collaborators, or faculty members in Indonesian universities.
