Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir urged the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) to prepare a roadmap for national basketball development as a key requirement for placing the sport among priorities for the 2028 Olympics.

Speaking at the inauguration of Perbasi’s regional boards in Jakarta on Friday, he noted that Indonesian basketball has shown consistent progress since the men's national team secured its first SEA Games silver medal in Malaysia in 2001.

He praised the Perbasi for leading Indonesia to a gold medal in men’s basketball at the 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, and another gold through the women’s team at the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The minister then highlighted Indonesia’s successful co-hosting of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, saying it demonstrated Perbasi’s strong capability and organizational quality.

He emphasized that basketball in Indonesia has grown as a professional sport free from political interests, thanks to the dedication of individuals striving to advance the discipline.

Thohir stressed the importance of synergy and collective efforts to ensure long-term basketball development in the country.

He added that the government is committed to supporting all sports, with a special focus on 17 prioritized disciplines to be listed through a forthcoming ministerial decree.

“I hope that basketball will make it onto the list of core sports. But to achieve that, the association must show seriousness in developing the discipline,” he said.

He explained that the list is being drafted in line with preparations to achieve targets at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and President Prabowo Subianto’s vision for national sports development.

“As Minister of Youth and Sports, I guarantee transparency and avoid partiality,” he remarked, calling on all national federations to intensify efforts to improve achievements and performance.
