Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf on Wednesday inaugurated 860 teachers for Sekolah Rakyat schools, a government-run free full-boarding school program for children from extremely poor and vulnerable families, to strengthen human resources in primary education serving vulnerable groups.

Yusuf said the induction complements the earlier appointment of 1,335 teachers under the Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK) scheme.

“With today’s addition, the total number of teachers serving in Sekolah Rakyat across Indonesia continues to grow to support inclusive education services,” he stated.

Sekolah Rakyat is a flagship program of the Prabowo-Gibran administration that provides free, full-boarding education for children from extremely poor and vulnerable families.

The program offers quality education for children from the lowest-income groups listed in the National Socioeconomic Data.

By 2025, 166 pilot schools are expected to serve nearly 16,000 students, supported by 2,400 teachers and more than 4,000 educational staff, with plans for modern learning facilities and permanent school buildings after land acquisition.

The minister also confirmed the appointment of 10 functional officials, including social workers, social counselors, and auditors, within the Sekolah Rakyat system.

Addressing hundreds of teachers from across the country, he underscored the role of Sekolah Rakyat in providing education for children from vulnerable families, indigenous communities, and remote areas, making teacher competence essential to the program’s success.

The government is also preparing welfare support, including allowances for Sekolah Rakyat teachers, to ensure they can carry out their duties effectively and sustainably.

The Social Affairs Ministry will continue improving teacher capacity through regular training and supervision, integrated with other social empowerment programs to align educational services with efforts to improve beneficiary family welfare.

The government is equipping all Sekolah Rakyat schools with modern learning technology, including interactive whiteboards, internet-enabled laptops, and uniforms for students, teachers, and dormitory supervisors by the end of 2025.
