Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Military's Army (TNI AD) has deployed hundreds of soldiers to assist in handling floods and landslides across several areas on Sumatra Island.

Head of TNI AD Information Office, Colonel Donny Pramono, said the deployment demonstrates the Army's commitment to supporting communities whenever disasters occur.

“Recently, regional commands reported that around 200 to 300 personnel from Bukit Barisan District Military Command (Kodam) were directly involved. Personnel from Kodam XX, approximately 200 soldiers, were also involved,” Pramono said here on Thursday.

He added that disaster response is currently being handled locally, with teams mobilized from various army corps.

“Complete teams have been deployed, including personnel, medical units, logistics teams for operating public kitchens, and combat engineering units for relocation, cleanup, and other tasks,” he explained.

He emphasized that the Indonesian Military is committed to being present for the people, responding quickly to any disaster.

“All TNI units were deployed immediately on the same day the disasters occurred,” he said.

With the deployment of personnel to affected areas, he hopes conditions will return to normal quickly. “Hopefully within three to four days, the situation will be cleared and back to normal,” he stated.

Meanwhile, he added that his side is still monitoring several disaster points, including in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

As of Wednesday (November 26), the North Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that 13 people have died due to hydrometeorological disasters across seven districts/cities in the province.

Head of Emergency Response, Equipment, and Logistics at North Sumatra BPBD, Sri Wahyuni Pancasilawati, said the victims include nine fatalities in South Tapanuli, comprising six in Batangtoru, one in Sipirok, and one in West Angkola Sub-districts.

Meanwhile, four fatalities were reported in Mardame Village, Central Tapanuli, after being buried under landslide debris inside their homes.
