Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s women’s empowerment and child protection minister visited a flood evacuation centre in Padang, West Sumatra, to ensure the needs of women and children are being met as emergency efforts continue.

“We are deeply concerned about the disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. I came with my team to meet survivors, especially women and children who face the highest risks during emergencies,” Minister Arifah Fauzi said.

In a statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday, she said her ministry has coordinated with provincial and district governments to assess conditions and identify priority needs.

The shelter at Public Elementary School (SDN) 02 Cupak Tangah in Padang’s Pauh Sub-district is hosting 1,973 people from 481 families. They include six pregnant women, 36 infants, 171 children, 71 older people and one person with disabilities.

Arifah said protecting vulnerable groups remains a central government priority during the crisis.

“The state is here to ensure all women, children, older people and persons with disabilities receive adequate protection and essential support during the emergency and recovery phase,” she said.

Local authorities and community groups have begun offering psychosocial support in several affected locations.

Aid distribution continues to prioritise hygiene kits, maternal and infant supplies, basic medicines and psychological assistance for women and children.

During her visit, Arifah distributed milk to children to help maintain nutrition in the shelter.

She also praised search-and-rescue teams, medical workers, police, military, local officials and volunteers for their role in evacuations, relief efforts and reaching isolated areas.
