Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is intensifying efforts to ensure the steady flow of relief supplies to communities hit by floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, a senior minister said Wednesday.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno highlighted the nationwide response during a press briefing at the Sumatra Disaster Aid Command Post at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta.

He said more than 500,000 tons of relief goods had been delivered to affected regions so far.

“We have dispatched over 500,000 tons of assistance from various agencies, including basic food packages, ready-to-eat meals, medicines, tents, blankets and other direct support for residents, even in areas where access has been cut off,” he said.

Pratikno added that coordination among ministries and government bodies had been strengthened to safeguard logistics distribution and accelerate the search for victims.

“In recent days, the command structure has been reinforced continuously. Integrated command posts at provincial and district levels are fully operational,” he said.

He noted that national support posts have been set up by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the armed forces (TNI), the police (Polri) and related ministries.

“The uninterrupted movement of logistics remains a top priority,” he added.

Heavy rains triggered the floods and landslides across the three provinces in late November, destroying homes, cutting off major routes and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

Local governments have declared emergency response status, effective from November 28 to December 11 in Aceh, November 27 to December 10 in North Sumatra, and November 25 to December 8 in West Sumatra.

BNPB data as of December 3 showed the disaster had killed 770 people, with 463 others still missing.

The agency said more than 3.2 million residents had been affected in varying degrees, from displacement and loss of livelihoods to the destruction of public facilities.
