Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is extending weather-modification operations in North Sumatra and Aceh to keep air routes open for delivering relief supplies to flood-hit areas, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Wednesday.

Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said the cloud-seeding operations are aimed at reducing thick clouds and strong headwinds that frequently disrupt helicopter operations over hilly terrain, delaying aid deliveries to isolated communities.

He spoke during an online briefing late Wednesday on the government’s response to the floods and landslides affecting Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.

Poor weather often forces air crews to wait for safe flying conditions before resuming drops, slowing relief distribution while land access remains limited, he said.

“Weather-modification operations are vital. BNPB and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will continue them as long as needed to support ground teams and keep air logistics steady,” Abdul said.

BNPB has carried out 12 sorties of weather-modification operations so far, dispersing 16 tons of seeding material.

On ground access in Aceh, Abdul said the route from North Aceh to East Aceh is now passable despite lingering water in Perlela.

Motorcycle access has reopened between North Aceh and Bener Meriah, while the Aceh Tamiang–Langkat corridor is gradually improving, with fuel and logistics trucks able to pass.
