In a post on the Cabinet Secretariat’s social media account, he said President Prabowo Subianto highlighted the newborn cub during a meeting with China’s top political adviser, Wang Huning, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.
“During his meeting with China’s CPPCC Chairman Wang Huning, President Prabowo introduced Indonesia’s first panda cub born at Taman Safari,” Teddy told reporters in Jakarta.
He said Prabowo named the cub Satrio Wiratama, a phrase meaning “to fight with honor, courage, and noble character.”
The name reflects bravery and virtue, he added.
Teddy noted that Indonesia and China began planning a panda-breeding program roughly a decade ago, though previous attempts failed before this year’s successful birth. “Pandas are part of Indonesia–China diplomacy,” he said.
During the palace meeting, Prabowo also recounted the panda’s birth to Wang, emphasizing the milestone for Indonesia.
In a livestream on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel, the meeting initially turned to a discussion about an antique vase displayed in one of the palace rooms before shifting to the panda story.
Prabowo then showed Wang a photo of the panda that recently gave birth, noting that the mother has lived in Indonesia for ten years under a long-term conservation loan.
“This panda arrived ten years ago. Only yesterday she finally gave birth to a cub,” Prabowo said.
He added that the mother remains closely bonded with her newborn and cannot be separated, describing the panda’s maternal behavior as a key part of ongoing conservation efforts.
