Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto noted that Indonesia and Pakistan hold similar values as the two largest Muslim nations in the world, while upholding a moderate interpretation of Islam that promotes inclusivity and tolerance.

In a joint statement with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister's official residence (PM House) in Islamabad on Tuesday, Prabowo said that both countries share a historical relationship.

"We have shared values and interests. We may both be the largest Muslim countries in the world, but our view is a moderate Islam that promotes inclusivity, tolerance, and historical ties," he stated as broadcast live on YouTube in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to him, the relationship between Indonesia and Pakistan is also forged with strong solidarity.

Therefore, Prabowo emphasized the need to utilize this momentum in strengthening relations between the two countries, particularly through cooperation in multiple sectors.

Meanwhile, PM Sharif stated that diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Pakistan have existed for more than 75 years.

He then suggested that the bilateral commemoration of the two countries be celebrated in the two capitals, Islamabad and Jakarta.

"Your visit coincides with the anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Let us agree to celebrate this 75th anniversary in Jakarta and Islamabad," Sharif said.

He also detailed that the relationship between Pakistan and Indonesia predates Indonesia's independence.

According to him, the founder of Pakistan, Qaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who was then President of the All-India Muslim League, supported Indonesia's independence.

"He fully supported Indonesia's first President, Sukarno. In August 1945, Indonesia claimed its independence, although the Dutch officially recognized it in 1949. I think that was an extraordinary heroic struggle on the part of the Indonesian people," he disclosed.

Prior to the joint statement, the two leaders held a one-on-one meeting, which was followed by a bilateral meeting involving their respective delegations.

President Prabowo and PM Sharif later witnessed the exchange of several cooperation documents, which laid the foundation for partnerships in higher education; halal product trade and certification; development of micro, small, and medium enterprises; efforts against drug-related crimes; and healthcare improvement.
