Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transmigration is developing avocado agrotourism at the Tanjung Banun transmigration site in Batam, Riau Islands, to boost the local economy.

According to Transmigration Minister Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, avocado agrotourism development in the Tanjung Banun transmigration area will begin in 2026.

"Earlier, we discussed with the community to plant avocados in Tanjung Banun. We already have a pilot project in Kediri, East Java, where all residents are empowered and productive," he stated on Sunday (December 21).

To support the program, he invited Agus Joko Susilo, the Head of Jambu Village, Kediri District, to inspect the land's suitability in Tanjung Banun.

Susilo has been known to successfully develop his village by cultivating various avocado varieties, including the alligator avocado, which is larger than most avocados.

"He is developing avocado agrotourism in his area. I brought him to see if Tanjung Banun is suitable for avocado cultivation," the minister remarked.

Based on Susilo's inspection, the Tanjung Banun transmigration site is suitable for avocado cultivation.

"This is very suitable. We will assist. I have already conveyed this to the neighborhood heads," he noted.

Suryanagara said the focus of transmigration today is on boosting productivity, by turning idle land into productive assets and helping less productive communities become more productive.

"Avocado cultivation is an excellent example, so I brought the Jambu Village Head to see firsthand whether Tanjung Banun is suitable for avocado cultivation. He said it is very suitable," the minister confirmed.

He then explained that 72 varieties of avocado can be planted in Tanjung Banun, expected to become a unique attraction from the region.

Meanwhile, Agus Joko Susilo conveyed readiness to collaborate with the local community to grow large avocados.

"We have many opportunities, under the Minister's direction, for the residents of Tanjung Banun, this area will become a fruit agrotourism destination, which will boost their income," he concluded.
