Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar underscored that Christmas is not only a religious celebration but also a reminder of universal values such as love, care, and solidarity.

Speaking during Christmas celebrations at the Sacred Heart of Mary Cathedral in Manado, North Sulawesi, Umar said the occasion highlights the importance of translating faith into genuine concern for others.

“Amidst the nation’s various challenges, Christmas reminds us that solidarity, empathy, and brotherhood are the main strengths in maintaining unity,” he remarked.

Umar was welcomed by Bishop Benedictus Estephanus Rolly Untu, priests, and thousands of Catholics who filled the cathedral.

He extended Christmas greetings to Christians in North Sulawesi and across Indonesia, urging all religious communities to uphold unity and strengthen social harmony as foundations for building a peaceful and just society.

Bishop Untu expressed appreciation for the minister’s presence, noting that it reflects the state’s attention to the lives of religious communities.

“This reinforces the fact that the Church and the government are working together to build a harmonious and loving religious life,” he said.

Head of the Regional Office of the Religious Ministry for North Sulawesi Ulyas Taha added that the province has long been recognized for its culture of tolerance and interfaith harmony.

“North Sulawesi is a shared home of harmony. We continue to nurture togetherness and concern with all elements of society and religious communities,” he stated.

The minister’s attendance at the Manado Cathedral celebration reaffirms the Religious Affairs Ministry’s commitment to fostering religious harmony, strengthening interfaith brotherhood, and safeguarding unity in national life.
