Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with the Indonesian Navy, is intensifying maritime safety measures during the Christmas and New Year holiday period through joint patrols, port monitoring, and personnel readiness.

“We are here to provide security and a sense of safety for all Indonesians enjoying the long Christmas and New Year holidays,” said Rear Admiral Yayan Sofiyan, Chief of Naval Staff Operations Assistant, on Thursday.

He delivered the remarks during the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 Patrol Operations meeting at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, attended by Director General of Sea Transportation Muhammad Masyhud, representatives from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), state port operator Pelindo, and other maritime stakeholders.

Sofiyan explained that the coordination follows discussions between Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi and Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, underscoring the importance of synergy in securing sea transport routes during the holiday season.

The collaboration includes reinforced port security, deployment of regional naval units alongside harbormasters, and intensified promotion of maritime safety to vessel operators.

Measures cover ship seaworthiness, administrative compliance, safety equipment, communication systems, and activation of the automatic identification system for centralized vessel tracking.

Patrol units are also stationed in areas vulnerable to adverse weather, based on BMKG forecasts.

Masyhud highlighted that the cross-sector collaboration reflects the Patrol Operation Plan for Christmas and New Year, stressing that the patrols aim to provide reassurance rather than intimidation.

He noted that the operation addresses challenges such as extreme weather, heavy passenger and vessel traffic, and potential safety violations, while fostering unified understanding, coordinated action, and commitment to national maritime safety.
