Masdar’s Head of Business Development for Asia-Pacific Fatima Al Suwaidi told ANTARA on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week on Tuesday that Indonesia has a highly promising future in the energy sector, citing significant progress in the renewable industry over the past three to four years.
She highlighted the 145-MW Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant in West Java, which has been performing as expected and continues to draw international attention.
Building on that success, Al Suwaidi emphasized Masdar’s long-term vision for Indonesia.
“We see ourselves staying in Indonesia for a very long time. And we're looking to expand more on not only floating solar but also other types of renewable energy,” she remarked.
She further explained that Masdar’s partnership with Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) reflects the company’s intent to diversify its clean energy portfolio in Indonesia.
Masdar entered the Indonesian geothermal market in February 2023 by investing in PGE.
Currently, PGE’s geothermal plants generate 4.8 TWh of energy annually, avoiding approximately 3,915,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
She emphasized that Masdar sees itself as a long-term partner in Indonesia’s energy transition, noting the country’s rapid regulatory improvements and growing commitment to renewable energy.
“Indonesia has a very promising future when it comes to energy. There have been positive changes and positive steps forward in the last three to four years alone in the renewable industry in Indonesia,” she said.
Al Suwaidi added that like any foreign investor, Masdar looks for stability and clarity in regulation, as well as bankability.
“We want to be able to provide and offer affordable, reliable, clean energy that is sustainable and long term,” she explained.
She further noted that Indonesia has undergone an impressive transformation in the past decade in renewable energy.
“We have seen leaps of success that Indonesia has taken towards the right direction. Cirata helped unlock floating solar for Indonesia,” she said.
