Abu Dhabi (ANTARA) - The United Arab Emirates’ state‑owned renewable energy company Masdar announced that the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant in West Java has been performing as expected and continues to attract international attention.

Masdar’s Head of Business Development for Asia‑Pacific, Fatima Al Suwaidi, told ANTARA on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week on Tuesday that the Cirata plant has operated in line with projections, supported by thorough market studies and operational adjustments that account for both dry and wet seasons.

Al Suwaidi noted that the Cirata project has also continued to strengthen its operational capacity, including through the expansion of its on‑site team with Indonesian experts specifically recruited for the plant.

“The project has attracted significant attention from the international community. We host visitors twice a week at the Cirata site. It is a strong showcase of what Indonesia can achieve in floating solar and renewable energy as a whole,” she said.

Indonesia has identified around 250 reservoirs with potential for floating solar development.

Al Suwaidi said Masdar views Indonesia as a long‑term partner in scaling up its renewable energy ambitions.

“We are firmly committed to Indonesia. We have long‑term plans and want to remain a reliable partner for the government of Indonesia,” she said.

“We are very excited to see the growth, the government’s involvement, and the introduction of new regulations that unlock Indonesia’s potential.”

Al Suwaidi emphasized that Indonesia has made “positive changes and positive steps forward” in the renewable energy sector over the past three to four years, creating a more conducive environment for investment.

She added that floating solar remains particularly promising given Indonesia’s vast reservoir areas.

“We want to work with the government to scale up and replicate the success of Cirata across other reservoirs,” she said.

In January 2020, Masdar signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with PT PLN Nusantara Renewables, a subsidiary of state‑owned enterprise PT PLN (Persero), to develop a floating solar power plant in Cirata.

The 145‑megawatt (MW) floating solar plant—Masdar’s first floating PV project and its inaugural renewable energy project in Southeast Asia—was built on a 250‑hectare area of the Cirata Reservoir in West Java.

The plant, which began operating in 2023, generates enough clean energy to supply electricity to 50,000 homes while reducing carbon emissions by up to 214,000 tons annually.

In April 2025, Masdar and PLN signed another agreement to expand the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant to a total capacity of 500 MW.
