“This book is very important. Through research, the collection of artifacts and data, as well as visuals, cultural literacy becomes a binding force so that cultural expressions do not disappear and can be passed on across generations,” Zon said at the book launch here on Thursday.
The book documents the cultural wealth of southern Sumatra through women’s traditional attire, gold jewelry, and textiles from five provinces.
Zon officially launched the book on stage together with Chairwoman of Putri Bumi Sriwijaya, Prinny Harun Sohar. The book launch event was packaged as an artistic performance showcasing cultural expressions, including performances representing the richness of textiles and traditions of southern Sumatra.
Selayang Kemilau Bhumi Lima Negeri highlights the history of a region long known as Swarnadwipa, or the Island of Gold, which formed part of the glory of the Sriwijaya Kingdom in southern Sumatra around the 7th century.
Zon also emphasized that the state has a constitutional mandate to promote national culture amid global civilization. According to him, book publication is an important tool to ensure culture is properly documented and preserved.
“Books are often underestimated, whereas through books, culture can become everlasting,” he said.
He added that contributions from communities, including Putri Bumi Sriwijaya, also support efforts in advancing culture.
The book features 32 women’s bridal dresses, 39 women’s traditional outfits, as well as various accessories and textiles from South Sumatra, Lampung, Bengkulu, Jambi, and Bangka Belitung.
