Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the formation of a study team to analyze and draft a grand design for addressing flooding across Java, following heavy rainfall that has triggered floods in several regions, including Jakarta.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the president had instructed the government to immediately establish a team to examine water management challenges and formulate a comprehensive flood mitigation plan for the island.

He acknowledged that flooding has long been a recurring problem in Indonesia and stressed the importance of integrated solutions that address water management from upstream to downstream.

According to Hadi, President Prabowo continues to closely monitor flood developments nationwide despite being abroad and remains in constant communication with relevant officials to manage the impacts of the heavy rains.

He added that the central government is coordinating with the Jakarta Provincial Government, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to strengthen weather modification operations in the Greater Jakarta area.

Hadi emphasized that cross-sectoral coordination is essential, including efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding on transportation infrastructure such as railways.

Over the past week, floods have been reported at 17 points along railway tracks, including several locations that had never previously experienced flooding, resulting in significant disruptions to train schedules and services.

Beyond weather conditions, Hadi noted that flooding has also been exacerbated by changes in spatial planning, river sedimentation, and the loss of retention basins in the Greater Jakarta area, which traditionally function as critical water catchment zones.

As a result, President Prabowo has ordered a multi-agency response involving the National Development Planning Ministry and the Ministry of Public Works.

High-intensity rainfall has caused flooding in multiple areas across Java, including Lamongan, Pekalongan, Batang, Kudus, Demak, Pati, Jepara, Karawang, Bekasi, and North Jakarta.

In Jakarta, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that floods inundated 45 neighborhoods and 22 road sections, with water levels ranging from 15 to 90 centimeters.
