"We are also going to modernize what we call new fishing villages. We will build at least 1,000 this year, but we actually want to allocate funds for 5,000 villages," he told world leaders at the high-level conference on Thursday (Jan. 22).
In his special address, he explained that under the Red and White Fishing Villages program, the Indonesian government aims to develop adequate infrastructure and facilities, including ice factories and diesel fuel stations, for approximately 2,000 fishermen in each village.
"We will build diesel stations in every village. They (fishermen) will have very easy access (to fuel)," Prabowo affirmed.
He continued that the modernization initiative is expected to benefit around 10 million fishermen and their families, thereby improving the livelihoods of at least 40 million Indonesian citizens.
Furthermore, the president highlighted the program's ongoing pilot project in Biak Numfor District, Papua Province, which he claimed has delivered tangible economic benefits to the local community.
He noted that the project has produced a "very heartening" outcome, citing a 60 percent increase in the annual income of local residents.
The Indonesian leader also used the global forum to highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to operate 83,000 cooperatives under the Red and White Village Cooperatives program, which equips each cooperative with storage facilities, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other supporting infrastructure.
He noted that these cooperatives are intended to distribute subsidized goods directly to villagers, thereby reducing the role of middlemen.
A Geneva-based non-governmental organization and think tank, the WEF has organized annual high-level conferences in Davos since 1971, bringing together state and government leaders as well as experts, practitioners, and academics to discuss the global economy, its challenges, and future projections.
