Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto on Saturday praised the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for its active role during national crises, citing its swift response to recent flash floods and landslides in several provinces as an example of religious leadership supporting public resilience.

“Recently, we saw MUI step in from the very first days of disasters in several regions, including Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra and other provinces,” Prabowo said during the inauguration of the MUI leadership for the 2025–2030 term at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque.

The president expressed deep appreciation for the council’s involvement in humanitarian efforts, particularly in providing moral guidance, mobilizing aid and supporting affected communities alongside government agencies.

“I highly commend and salute the responsibility and contribution of the Indonesian Ulema Council,” he said.

Addressing more than 58,000 participants, including Islamic scholars and religious leaders from across the country, Prabowo thanked MUI for consistently maintaining its role as a source of calm and cohesion during times of uncertainty.

“The Indonesian Ulema Council always plays a significant and decisive role in the life of the nation and the state,” he said.

“MUI is a pillar of stability, calmness, harmony and tolerance among all people and religions in Indonesia,” he added.

Prabowo urged the newly appointed MUI leadership to uphold the council’s credibility and continue acting as a stabilizing force amid social, economic and political pressures facing the country.

“May the newly elected MUI continue its service to the people and the entire nation,” he said.

“Today marks the unity of ulema, the religious scholars, and umara, the leaders, in Indonesia, guaranteeing the nation’s revival and strength.”

The president also highlighted the importance of unity in confronting persistent national challenges, including poverty, inequality and the impact of natural disasters, which he said required collective resolve.

“We must work together with courage and determination to eliminate poverty in Indonesia. We must not fear, and we must not falter in the face of difficulties,” Prabowo said.

The inauguration and introduction ceremony of MUI’s 2025–2030 leadership, themed “United in Prayer for the Safety of the Nation,” concluded with collective prayers for communities affected by recent disasters, underscoring the council’s role in blending spiritual guidance with social responsibility.
