Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has disbursed Rp72.7 billion (US$4.3 million) in funds to support the pre-Ramadan beef feasting tradition, meugang, in Aceh for residents still recovering from the major disasters that struck Sumatra last November.

“Praise be to God, Mr. President has approved the request of the government and people of Aceh for meugang beef, with the funds already transferred,” Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah remarked in Banda Aceh on Wednesday.

He noted that the financial assistance was disbursed by the Presidential Secretariat to the governments of 19 districts and cities in the province on Tuesday (Feb. 10).

“Each government will then proceed to distribute the aid to residents,” he added, while expressing appreciation and gratitude to the president and the central government for the assistance.

The aid was intended for 1,455 villages across Lhokseumawe, Aceh Tamiang, Pidie Jaya, East Aceh, Bireuen, Langsa, North Aceh, West Aceh, Pidie, Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues, Southeast Aceh, Aceh Singkil, Subulussalam, Aceh Besar, Nagan Raya, South Aceh, and Simeulue.

The deputy governor underscored that the fund transfers were primarily intended to ease the economic burdens of flood and landslide victims as they prepare to welcome the fasting month of Ramadan.

He urged district heads and mayors across Aceh to promptly convert the funds into cattle or beef to meet the consumption needs of disasterhit citizens while preserving the tradition.

“We have set a target for local authorities to complete aid distribution no later than one day ahead of Ramadan,” Fadhlullah affirmed.

Stressing accountability, he said each district and municipal government is required to submit documentation of distribution in the form of photos or videos and brief reports to the Aceh Regional Secretariat three days into Ramadan at the latest.

The realization of the funds will then be forwarded to President Prabowo, he added.
