Batang, Central Java (ANTARA) - State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported that three high school students died after being struck by the Argo Merbabu train while taking selfies near the railway tracks at GOR Sarengat, here on Saturday.

Public Relations Manager of KAI Operations Area 4 Semarang, Luqman Arif, said that after the incident, the Argo Merbabu train made an extraordinary stop for a facilities inspection.

“After being declared safe by the railway crew members, the train resumed its journey at 7:09 a.m. local time,” Arif said.

The three students, who died after being hit by the Argo Merbabu train on the Semarang-Gambir route, were identified as IS (15), D (15), and G (15), all residents of Kasepihan Sub-district, Batang District.

Arif expressed condolences and concern over the accident. “KAI Operations Area 4 Semarang expresses its deepest concern and regret over this incident,” he said.

KAI Operations Area 4 Semarang reminded the public not to engage in activities on railway tracks, in accordance with Law Number 23 of 2007 on Railways.

The company has continued to conduct safety outreach in schools and communities to prevent similar accidents.

“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that railway tracks are not places for recreation, let alone for taking selfies,” he added.

In several areas of Batang, railway tracks are often used as gathering spots by youths during Ramadan due to their open locations and minimal supervision.

A guard at the GOR Sarengat level crossing post said the area poses significant risks, as trains travel at high speeds and often without prolonged horn signals.

“Therefore, we hope parents will remind their children to stay away from railway tracks. Tracks are a deadly zone; if people are not careful, we do not want to see more victims,” he said.
