Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday to discuss accelerating the construction of a giant sea wall.

The project is designed to span the northern coast of Java to protect critical areas from tidal flooding and climate change impacts.

Following the meeting, Java Northern Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ) head Didit Herdiawan Ashaf explained that discussions focused on refining development plans.

"We are still in the planning phase and will further look into the technical aspects of the construction," he told the press.

While a specific timeline has not been set, Ashaf emphasized that the president has ordered the project to be fast tracked.

The authority is currently calculating the timeline based on the availability of domestic resources to support the massive infrastructure effort.

Higher Education Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, who also attended the meeting, explained that the president also urged universities to support the construction.

He stated that the sea wall is essential for protecting 60 percent of industrial zones and over 30 million residents along the northern coast, or locally known as Pantura.

"Many research results from universities have already been tested including successful examples in Demak and Semarang," Yuliarto said.

The minister added that academic institutions have been asked to play an active role in the technical implementation of the project.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Cabinet Secretary to ensure cross sectoral coordination.

The giant sea wall is a cornerstone of the national strategic programs aimed at long term coastal resilience for the island of Java.

To manage this strategic project, the government formed the Java Northern Coast Management Authority in 2025.

The authority operates in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 77 of 2025 to oversee the planning and execution phases.
