Jakarta (ANTARA) - Fifty Buddhist monks will join the Indonesia Walk for Peace from Bali to Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, ahead of the Vesak celebration, a ministry official said.

The spiritual journey will run from May 7 to 31, Director General of Buddhist Community Guidance Supriyadi said on Wednesday.

The participating monks will come from Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Malaysia.

He said Bali was chosen as the starting point due to its historical links to Buddhism.

The Walk for Peace is part of the month-long Vesakha Sananda 2026 series leading to Vesak Day on May 31.

This year's Vesak commemoration carries the theme "Dharma Maintains World Peace."

The Vesak series will include meditation, Dhamma classes, environmental campaigns, charity activities, cultural events, and spiritual programs.

Environmental activities will include clean-up campaigns, recycling programs, and Fang Shen, or the release of living beings.

The Vesak commemoration will conclude with nationwide Puja Bhakti prayers on May 31.
