Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko stated on Wednesday that 15 sponsors were identified as the parties responsible for the foreign nationals involved in the gambling ring.
"We have identified 15 guarantors or sponsors responsible for the presence of these foreign nationals in Indonesia," he confirmed in a statement.
His office is currently investigating alleged immigration crimes committed by the 320 foreign nationals through a joint investigation with the National Police.
The investigation has been ongoing since the foreign nationals were transferred to the Jakarta Immigration Detention Center and the Directorate General of Immigration on Sunday.
Marantoko emphasized that the Directorate General of Immigration not only targets individual foreigners but also conducts in-depth investigations of sponsors or guarantors.
Immigration also has the right to take legal action if either the foreigner or the sponsor shows any indication of involvement in a criminal act.
"As stipulated in the Immigration Law, our investigators also have the authority to legally process alleged immigration crimes committed by either foreigners or their sponsors," Marantoko conveyed.
On May 9, the National Police arrested 321 people in connection with the international online gambling network following a raid in the Hayam Wuruk area.
On the following day the police announced that 320 of the people involved were foreign nationals whose detention was entrusted to the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional.
In detail the perpetrators arrested included 57 Chinese nationals and 228 Vietnamese nationals as well as 11 Laotian nationals and 13 Myanmar nationals.
The group also consisted of three individuals each from Malaysia and Cambodia along with five Thai nationals involved in the Hayam Wuruk gambling ring.
