Hidayat condemned what he described as continuing humanitarian violations by Israel, including the detention of Indonesian journalists and activists involved in a peaceful mission highlighting conditions in Gaza.
He said the arrest of the five Indonesians in international waters constituted a serious violation of international law and humanitarian principles.
“I am deeply concerned about the continuing humanitarian violations committed by Israel and its Zionist forces against humanitarian activists,” Hidayat said Tuesday.
According to Hidayat, the incident reflected the absence of firm international sanctions against Israel following previous alleged violations.
He also expressed appreciation for activists, volunteers and journalists participating in the humanitarian mission despite the risks involved.
“Hopefully their actions contribute to upholding international law, human rights and freedom, with the main goal of ending the suffering and isolation of Gaza,” he said.
Earlier, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said nine Indonesians joined the Global Peace Convoy Indonesia coalition participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 mission to Gaza.
“Based on information received this morning, five Indonesian citizens were reportedly detained by the Israeli military,” Yvonne said in a statement Tuesday.
She said the vessel carrying the Indonesians was intercepted Monday during its voyage from Turkey to Gaza.
Meanwhile, four other Indonesians aboard two separate vessels continued sailing near Cyprus waters, she added.
Yvonne said the situation remained highly dynamic, with Indonesians who avoided interception still facing the risk of detention.
The Foreign Ministry has coordinated with Indonesian embassies in Cairo, Rome, Amman and Istanbul to prepare assistance for detained citizens.
