Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - A flood reaching a height of up to two meters, inundated tens of houses in Belu District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, over the past two days.

The flood which followed the overflowing of the Rotiklot river in Kakuluk Mesak sub district forced a number of local residents to evacuate to safer areas, Arnold Bria, head of the Belu district social office, said here Friday.

Bria reported to NTT Governor Frans Lebu Raya that 23 houses have been inundated since January 23.

Incessant heavy rains have fallen in NTT for more than a week. The meteorological, climatology and geophysics office has predicted that the province would be affected by above-normal precipitation during January.

The floods in NTT has destroyed 85 hectares of agricultural farms, damaged 185 ha others, and killed several goats, chicken and pigs.

Meanwhile, in South Sulawesi, floods have hit the districts of Barru, Pangkep, Maros, Bone, Gowa, Takalar, and Kota Makassar for two days.

"Our houses have been under water for two days after days of incessant rain which caused the Maros river to overflow," Tinggi Moncong subdistrict resident in Maros district, Muhammad Anwar, said on Friday.

Muhammad said the flood which was worsened by tidal sea water in Maros district had inundated thousands of houses and around 500 hectares of rice fields at Moncongloe, Turikale, Lau, and Maros Baru subdistrict.

While in neighboring Maros district of Pangkep, the flood was triggered by the overflow of Tabo-Tabo dam water on Wednesday, January 12, 2011.

Thousands of houses, including Pangkep district head`s along the banks of Pangkep river and near Tabo-Tabo dam as of Friday morning were still being inundated by flood waters.
