"The police are conducting cyber-patrol to detect the practice," Jakarta Metropolitan Police head of public relations, Senior Commissioner Baharudin Djafar, said here on Wednesday.
He denied that the police had never watched the operation of the service of offering sex workers through the Internet.
He said the Jakarta Metro Police had a cyber crime unit that is assigned to trace all crimes committed through the Internet.
Baharudin also said that the police are cooperating with other offices concerned to uncover cyber crimes like prostitution and on-line gambling.
"Even officers of the Community Counseling Unit have given knowledge as part of preventing the crimes to school students," he said.
Baharudin`s statement came following the uncovering of alleged cases of trafficking of underaged girls to be employed as sex workers.
Earlier members of the intelligence unit of the Central Jakarta Police Command recently nabbed an alleged actor in the case of underaged girl trade through a social network account in the Internet known by his name as Ade.
The Central Jakarta police chief intelligence Adjunct Senior Commissioner Yoyon Toni said Ade was caught in Manggarai, South Jakarta, on Monday January 18.
Yoyon said Ade confessed he had operated for two years offering teenage girls and receiving orders from would-be buyers through the Internet.
Yoyon said the case was uncovered after victims reported it to the police. Seven victims had reported it to the police who immediately developed the information that led to the arrest of the suspect.
He said the police had also arrested a man known by his initial as A believed to have made an order for a sex worker at one of the apartments in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
He said the police caught the man while he was about making an intercourse with the woman he got through Ade at a cost of Rp2 million.(*)
