Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Awakening Party (PKB) is still undecided about a proposal for the formation of a House of Representatives (DPR) special committee to probe tax mafia cases, its chairman said.

"PKB has yet to decide whether to withdraw or continue (its support for the proposal)," Muhaimin Iskandar said on the sidelines of a discussion organized by the party`s executive board here on Sunday.

Muhaimin who is also transmigration and manpower minister said the PKB faction in the DPR had not formally informed him of the proposal.

He said the PKB still had to study the urgency in the formation of the special committee. The party was of the view that it would be better to let the working committee work first instead of forming a special committee.

"Let`s wait the working committee to work first. Only if it proves ineffective we can form a special committee... PKB wants the working committee to work first," he said.

Thirty lawmakers from nine factions in the DPR had earlier proposed that the House use its right of inquiry to investigate tax mafia cases which they said had caused hundreds of trillions of rupiahs in losses to the state.

Nudirman Munir of the Golkar Party faction in the House who also joined other lawmakers in proposing the formation of special committee said the proposal was based on law enforcing agencies` foot-dragging in handling the Gayus Tambunan tax case.

However, seven of eight members of the Democratic Party faction withdrew their support from the proposed tax mafia inquiry.

DPR Deputy Chairman Pramono Anung said based on the DPR`s code of ethics a proposal for the House to use the right of inquiry must be conveyed to the DPR leadership and supported by at least 25 lawmakers.

"With the seven lawmakers withdrawing their support, only 23 lawmakers now support the proposal for the House to use the right of inquiry to probe tax mafia cases so the number does not meet the requirements," he said.(*)
