Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former finance ministry official Bahasyim Assifie was sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined by Rp250 million on Wednesday.

"He has been convincingly and validly proven guilty of corruption and money laundering," chief judge Didik Setyo Handono said reading the verdict at the South Jakarta district court.

The sentence was lower than 15 years in jail sought by the prosecutors.

The judges said the convict with his action had not supported the government`s anti-corruption program.

They mentioned in Bahasyim`s favour his health conditions. Bahasyim has kidney problems and heart conditions.

Prosecutor Fachrizal said in his indictment that based upon Bahasyim`s current accounts the convict had transferred and withdrew cash from 2004 to 2010 totalling Rp843.4 billion.

From around mid April 2010 the balance of his wife`s account (Sri Purwanti) reached Rp905 billion and that of Winda Arum Hampsari (his daughter) Rp26.5 billion.

The prosecutor said the defendant collected all the money illegally from tax payers such as from Kartini Mulyadi who gave him money for fear he would harass her company with his power as an official of the Directorate General of Taxation.

Because of that "Kartini Mulyadi agreed to meet the defendant`s demand," he said.(*)
