Berlin (ANTARA News/IRNA-OANA) - German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle here Wednesday evening warned Egyptian government of harsh international reactions over ongoing crackdown against pro-democracy protesters, German television station ARD reported.

Talking on the phone with Egyptian Vice-President Omar Suleiman, he said any continued attacks against peaceful demonstrators in Egypt would have international consequences.

He reiterated any further suppression of the anti-Mubarak movement would `surely lead to a joint international response.`

Westerwelle told Suleiman Egypt`s transition to democracy had to begin `now.`

The minister`s remarks come amid pitched street battles in Cairo and President Hosni Mubarak`s reluctance to immediately relinquish his grab on power. (*)
