Jepara, C Java (ANTARA News) - A flash flood triggered by heavy rains swept through a number of villages in three subdistricts in Jepara district, Central Java, on Sunday.

The heavy rains falling in the Muria mountain caused three rivers flowing through the subdistricts to overflow, chief of the Jepara search and rescue team Totok Setyanto said.

The flash flood began to affect the areas at 04.00 a.m. after heavy rains fell in the areas since 02.00 a.m., he said.

The flood also inundated paddy fields and houses.

"My house was also flooded. However, the water level is not too high," Purnomo, resident of Mayong Lor village, said.

The water level in worst-hit areas could reach 75 cm, he said.

"The flood waters began to recede at 10 a.m.," he said.

The flood affected Mayong Lor, Mayong Kidul, Dorang, Blimbing Harho, and Pelem Kerep villages in Mayong subdistrict, Paren village in Welahan subdistrict, and Batukali village in Kalinyamatan subdistrict. (*)
