"Indonesia has the potentials needed to become economically self-sufficient but to this end it must explore and develop its natural resources maximally," Kalla said in a lecture at Paramadina University here on Tuesday (Feb 8).
In his lecture, Kalla also explained the difference between being a leader and being a manager.
"The essence of leadership is leading the people towards the achievement of their goals while a manager leads the people based on existing regulations," Kalla said.
Moreover, he added, being a leader means having the authority to change regulations while a manager functions based on the rules.
As a businessman who had been in the government for 10 years, Kalla said he wanted to share his experience in encouraging the people to succeed in leadership, and know the difference between leader and manager.
"When you are a leader, you must have courage to change the rules and be responsible for all the policies adopted," he said.
He also said there was also a difference between leader in business and leader in the government`s service.
"In business, the most important thing is results while the process comes second. Meanwhile process is number one in governmental administration and the results are secondary," he said,
Kalla also added that as a leader one must be ready to bear the consequences of not being popular because it was the leader`s duty to make policies to which not all people agreed.
"If you want to be a leader, you must be ready to be unpopular. The leader`s duty is to make rules and policies, and this guiding principle cannot satisfy everyone because there will be pros and cons following the procedure," he said.
Kalla`s lecture was also attended by Anies Baswedan, the rector of Paramadina University.(*)
