Ismailiya, Egypt (ANTARA News/AFP) - An Egyptian protester died on Friday and 20 people were injured in clashes between police and demonstrators in the north Sinai town of Al-Arish, a security official told AFP.

The unidentified protester was killed in an exchange of gunfire between police and demonstrators who were trying to free detainees from a police station, the official said.

The clashes came as massive nationwide rallies demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak raged for an 18th day.

About 1,000 protesters broke off from a larger group demonstrating in the city, and headed towards a police station, lobbing firebombs and burning police cars, witnesses said.

More than a million people poured onto the streets of Egypt after the main weekly Muslim prayers across the country to demand the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak.

Anti-government protests erupted on January 25 and have left at least 300 people dead and many more injured or detained. (*)
