Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA News) - The National Committee on Transportation Safety (KNKT) is to investigate the accident involving a Lion Air passenger plane which skidded during landing on Monday (Feb 14) at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru.

The KNKT team would arrive in Pekanbaru on Tuesday to investigate the accident, the Airport`s duty manager, Ibnu Hasan, said here Tuesday.

The aircraft had been moved to the apron since 04.00 a.m. local time, he said.

The Lion Air plane with flight number JT 0392, coming in from Jakarta skidded on the runway on Monday (Feb 14) during its landing at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport at around 09.15 p.m. local time.

According to Ibnu, none of the 212 passengers was injured in the accident, but one of them, a middle-aged woman, fainted during the evacuation.

The airport was hit by heavy rain, strong winds and thunders when the accident occurred that caused the pilot of the airplane, Hambauran Andriansyah, to delay its landing, Ibnu said.

The airplane failed to turn properly at the turning point of the runway as it was running too fast so that its nose wheel reached the overrun area, he said.

An overrun area is an area at the end of runways as emergency space to slowly stop planes that overrun the runway on a landing that goes wrong. The airplane also hit and broke a landing guidance strobe, Ibnu said.

However, Ibnu could not comment much about the exact cause of the accident. "The cause of the accident will be officially announced by KNKT," he said. (*)
