Mamuju, W Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono has asked all elements in the society to preserve social cohesion, law and order, and stability because they were needed for the country`s economic development and welfare.

Social cohesion and stability as well as law and order in the society were a must for a country to gain welfare and high capability of competing with others, he said here Friday evening.

"Any state and province do not just rely on budgets to gain progress and welfare," he told a meeting of heads of districts from all over Sulawesi island here.

Instead, such factors as social cohesion and stability were conditions that Indonesia should have to enable it to attract and convince domestic and foreign investors, he said.

In achieving welfare, Indonesia needs investments."But, investors will not come if the situation of a region or country is tense," Boediono said.

Indonesia has been threatened by a series of incidents of sectarian violence over the past few years.

A series of attacks on Ahmadiyah religious sect`s followers and their properties even broke out in some parts of the country over the past two years.

The latest happened in Umbulan village Cikeusik subdistrict, Pandeglang district, Banten province, on February 6, killing three people.

Then on February 8, two churches were burned and another one vandalized following rioting after a district court sentenced a defendant on a blasphemy case to five years in jail that some people considered too lenient.
