"The exports to Yemen normally increased in the middle of the year, but the unrest opposing the government of that country did not affect the exports," Head of the foreign trade division of the North Sulawesi trade and industry agency Hanny Wajong said here Wednesday.
Hanny said North Sulawesi`s leading commodities had been exported to the middle eastern country particularly frozen and canned fish.
"Last year, the dispatch of frozen and canned fish to that country took place in the middle of the year, and the same will happen this year too, and it is hoped that the political crisis would soon come to an end so that the exports would not be affected," Hanny said.
A political situation has a strong effect on the economy including exports, especially if coupled with anarchy, but if the situation remains calm, Hanny said trade will proceed smoothly.
Head of the exports and imports division of the North Sulawesi trade and industry agency Son Sangadi said North Sulawesi`s exports to Yemen last year reached more than 1,338 tons.
"Frozen and canned fish are two commodities of North Sulawesi increasingly sought by Yemenis," Son said.
North Sulawesi exported the commodities not only to Yemen in the Middle East, but also to Egypt and three African countries Kenya, South Africa and Algeria.
The commodities sought by the people in the part of the world is not only fish, but also coconut, crude coconut oil and palm oil.(*)
