"The level of risk to foreigners is very high."
Ottawa (ANTARA News/AFP) - Canada warned its citizens late Sunday to avoid going to Yemen, citing an increased risk for foreigners there.

"Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against all travel to Yemen," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "The level of risk to foreigners is very high."

It said Canadians already there should review their circumstances and "seriously consider departing Yemen by commercial means while these are still available."

The warning came after suspected Al-Qaeda gunmen killed six soldiers in three separate attacks and Yemen`s opposition movement vowed to intensify protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh after the embattled leader refused to resign by the end of the year.

The opposition Common Forum called on protesters to step up demonstrations which have left at least 19 people dead since January 27, according to an AFP toll. Amnesty International counts at least 27 dead.

The advisory follows similar moves by Britain and the United States.
