Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA News) - A number of officials of Medical Office and Trade and Industry Office of South Tangerang District are checking imported Japanese food items sold in some shopping centers for radioactive materials.

"We want to make sure that food items distributed in South Tangerang are free from radioactive particles," the Head of Environment and Food Health Division of South Tangerang Administration Office, Anton Wibawa said here Monday.

On the joint inspection, electronic products, toys and some foods that were imported from Japan, such as sea fish, sauces, soya beans and instant noodles, were checked for the radioactive level.

The officials only checked the items that entered the market from the last two weeks, Anton said, adding that people should be careful in consuming and buying such Japanese products as they might contain radioactive materials.

The health hazardous effect would appear in the long term after a person consumed products that contain radioactive materials, he said.

However, in the inspection, there is no products that contain radioactive materials.

A spokesperson of Grocery Food Carrefour of Ciputat, Nur Hidayat, said that his office management would monitor the flow of imported products and food items, especially from Japan, in addition to government initial monitoring.
