Deli Serdang, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - At least 15 houses in Damak Maliho hamlet in Deli Serdang district, North Sumatra, were heavily damaged after being hit by a landslide on Friday.

No casualties were reported in the natural disaster but hundreds of million rupiahs worth of material damages were gone.

Several eyewitnesses said that the disaster occurred after a heavy rainfall and strong wind hitting the area.

"The landslide came from a hill close to the villagers` housing areas," said a local Bangun Purba resident Edison.

Most of the houses had been severely damaged and the residents had been forced out of their houses and fled to take shelter in their relatives and friends in other parts of the village.

According to the Deli Serdang information and communication office Chief Neken Sembiring the Deli Serdang district head Amri Tambunan has instructed the Bangun Purba sub district head to build a disaster mitigation post to assist the villagers.

"The institutions concerned at the Deli Serdang district administration have held a coordinating meeting to assist the disaster affected villagers at Bangun Purba district," he said.

Edison also said that the Bangun Purba sub district had carried out data collection to estimate the total loss from the disaster.(*)
