"Most Indonesian workers in Taiwan work as caretakers for elderly people."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is the biggest migrant worker supplier to Taiwan so far, the chief of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Workers Overseas (BNP2TKI), Moh Jumhur Hidayat, said.
Jumhur said, according to data from the Indonesian Trade and Economic Office in Taiwan, there are 161,000 Indonesian workers of the total of 380,000 foreign workers in Taiwan. The second place is taken by Vietnam with 120,000 workers, followed by the Philippines with 80,000 workers and Thailand with 50,000-60,000 workers.
"Most Indonesian workers in Taiwan work as caretakers for elderly people. This situation is natural considering that Taiwanese have quite a high life expectancy, namely about 90 percent from its total citizens of 27 million people," he said adding that other Indonesians worked on ships, in manufacturing industries and construction projects.
Jumhur said Indonesians working in households got paid Rp4.5 million per month on average with extra money for overtime. Meanwhile, ship crew members got Rp5 million per month while workers in manufacturing industries and construction projects got Rp5.5-6 million per month.
In a week, an average of 1,000 Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) arrived at Taoyuan airport in Taiwan, according to a report from an official of the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) at Taoyuan international airport.
The CLA office in Taoyuan which is under the Taiwan Manpower Ministry serves the arrival and repatriation of TKIs. CLA officers are tasked to receive those who have just arrived at Taoyuan and provide them with directives on the situation in Taiwan with regard to culture, law, and the character of their employers and their job.
The CLA personnel is also assisting the TKIs in solving their problems especially those who are returning to Indonesia through Taoyuan.
