He said the fighter aircraft were confirmed to be delivered in 2012 after the Air Force Headquarters signed a Letter of Credit for the purchase of the fighter planes.
"The Letter of Credit also states a period for training of our mechanics and pilots," he said.
He said the fighter planes would be delivered in stages as of early in 2012. "The value of the contract is around US$260 million and right now our task is preparing the means and facilities including shelters, hangar and office space," he said.
The fighters have capabilities which are superior compared to others. "Even the US chooses Super Tucano to strengthen its air force although its procurement is now hindered by a political policy in that country," he said.
He said Indonesia had made the order after its OV-10F Broncos were grounded.
"According to plans the Super Tucano fighters would be used to carry out tactical operations missions in helping land troops because the aircraft has the capability of conducting air-to-land close air support," he said.
The aircraft has a single engine made by Empressa Braziliera and also a capability of shooting smoke to the ground precisely to show the enemy`s position.
The aircraft is not only functioning as a trainer but could only be used to carry out destructive missions. (*)
