"We are asking the law-enforcing agencies not to hesitate any longer in acting against the NII movement. Any organization that undermines the four pillars of Indonesia`s state and nationhood - Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the unitary Republic of Indonesia principle, and the unity in diversity or Bhinneka Tunggal Ika creed - must be acted against," Lemhanas Governor Budi Susilo Soepandji said at a meeting with the press here Friday.
He said the NII movement had already influenced people`s mindsets in a way contradicting the purport of the four pillars of Indonesia`s state and nationhood and therefore had become a threat to the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia.
Citing reports from several institutes of higher learning, Budi said a number of students who before being recruited by NII stood out by their high academic performance, had experienced a drastic drop in their intellectual capabilities.
"They (NII) committed fraudulent acts but the perpetrators were unaware of their offenses because the working of their brains had been manipulated. Therefore, the police must arrest whoever is their mastermind," he said.
The existence of the NII movement had created unrest among the public in general, and in the academic world in particular, Budi said.
"This problem must be overcome as soon as possible, handled in smart and tactful ways through soft actions and the firm and measured enforcement of the law," the Lemhanas chief said. (*)
