Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) needs to prioritize issues on terrorism in their discussions on `ASEAN Security and Political Community` at its 18th summit here.

"Terrorism is our common enemy in ASEAN and therefore it should be the main issue in the discussions on ASEAN Security and Political Community," National Counter-terrorism Agency Chief Arsyad Mbay said on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Summit at Jakarta Convention Center on Saturday.

He said ASSEAN the way that has been pioneered so far by ASEAN countries in the handling of terrorism was the most tangible and concrete example.

"ASEAN cooperation in the handling of terrorism is the most tangible and concrete one at the most operational level with extradition mechanism and inter police cooperation," Arsyad said.

According to him, cooperation among ASEAN countries such as between Indonesia and the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore has been the basis of similar cooperation development in ASEAN Security and Political Community later.

"Cooperation that has been paved by the ASEAN member countries can be an embryo for another cooperation in the handling of terrorism," Arsyad Mbay said.(*)
