"We ask that the border problem between the two be solved through peaceful means," Indonesian House Speaker Marzuki Alie said here on Saturday.
Alie said the attitude was stressed by AIPA during a meeting between AIPA delegation and the leaders of countries grouped in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN.
He said that the peace efforts could be made through a number of mechanisms, either a regional level mechanism through ASEAN or a global mechanism through the United Nations.
The Indonesian House Speaker said that the AIPA also supported the Indonesian proposal to send an observer team to the Thai-Cambodian borders.
Alie explained that all kinds of conflicts and hostility would disturb the ASEAN stability. For that reason, all countries grouped in the association should be committed to resolving all kinds of conflicts through a peaceful means.
"The conflict would hamper efforts to achieve prosperity and stability is important for taking ASEAN towards its goals that we want to achieve," he said.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia was ready to send an observer team to the Thai-Cambodian borders. Any delay in the dispatch of the team would create negative impact on the peace efforts.
"The postponement would enable the outbreak of fresh conflicts in the border areas. We want to prevent this. That is why we need an independent observer team in the border," the foreign minister said.
He said that the team members would not be too big, only 15 observers inside the Thai area and 15 others inside the Cambodian area.
According to Marty, Thailand would officially invite the observer team from Indonesia if a number of requirements were met, among others, Cambodia would withdraw its troops from certain areas.
To discuss the Thai request, Indonesia as the ASEAN chair for 2011 would sit again together with the Thai and Cambodian delegates in a couple of days ahead.(*)
