Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The presidential office received a total of 1,609 complaints from members of the public within the last four months (January-April 2011) with each of them being given serious attention, a spokesman said.

The number did not include complaints conveyed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono through short text messages (SMS) to the call number 9949 which are handled by the president`s special staff for social communications, Yoseph Indrajaya, deputy for institutional and social relations to the minister/state secretary, said here Tuesday.

Of the number of complaints received during the January-April 2011 period, 407 concerned legal, judicial and human right matters, 238 personnel/manpower matters, 228 land/housing matters, 218 general matters, 184 perceived power abuse, 145 suspected corruption/illegal levies and 60 bureaucratic management.

So far, the state secretariat had taken follow-up action with the government agencies concerned on 714 of the complaints while the state secretariat was continuing to monitor the handling of 221 reports by the government agencies concerned, on 295 cases the state secretariat had commended the government agencies concerned (for having settled the problems) and duly informed the parties that had made the complaints while on the reminder of the cases the state secretariat was still conducting deeper examinations and collecting more clarifications.

"Every complaint addressed to the President will be responded to through the Minister/State Secretary provided it meets certain crieria," Yoseph Indrajaya said.

Complaints from members of the public that amount to social control, mention the reporter`s identity clearly, are logical and appropriate in substance/subject matter and supported by valid data or documents will be acted on immediately, he said.

Since the State Secrteariat had formed a special unit to handle complaints from members of the public in 2006, a total of 36,115 reports had been received, Yoseph said, adding the number increased from year to year.
