Surabaya (ANTARA News) - Security officers at Juanda international airport in Surabaya, East Java, foiled an attempt to smuggle in 1.4 kilograms of heroin from Malaysia.

According to the Surabaya 5th Navy Main Base here on Friday a joint team of Navy and Customs officers had arrested a Malaysian national known as Ganesan Sanmugan (24) as the drug`s owner.

The smuggling attempt was unveiled after an airport officer saw a suspicious stuff in a brown bag while it was being checked through an X-Ray Detector.

The officer then took the bag belonging to Ganesan and re-checked it manually. It was then officers found white powder hidden under the low layer of the bag. Following a "narcotest" officers confirmed the powder was heroin.

Upon the discovery the team of Navy and Customs officers immediately arrested the suspect and took him and the evidence to the Juanda airport`s Customs Office.

"The suspect and the evidence namely heroin weighing 1,400 have now been handed over to the police for further investigation," a member of the team said.

Ganesan flew from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Surabaya by Air Asia plane on Flight Number OZ-7618.
