Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) chairman Aziz Syamsuddin launched a Youth Movement to Plant One Billion Trees on Friday.

The movement`s purpose was to plant one billion trees nationwide in 33 provinces in observance of National Awakening Day on May 20, 2011.

He said here on Saturday the program was initiated by KNPI to save the environment, and it was expected to be emulated by other youth organizations across the country.

Azis, who is concurrently deputy chairman of the House of Representatives` Commission-III, said a series of concrete actions to plant one billion trees was also launched in Banten Province on Wednesday, May 19, and would continue to be done in stages across Indonesia.

Therefore, he called on all elements of the younger generation in the country to begin to rise up to save the earth from global damage by planting trees.

"It is time for all elements of the younger generation in Indonesia to support the national development program by planting trees to save the country`s environment from total destruction," Azis said.

The launching of the Youth Movement to Plant One Billion Trees was attended by the chairmen of 28 KNPI regional executive boards, the leaders of 68 national and regional youth organizations.

Azis said a similar tree-planting activity by youths would also be conducted in West Java, Central Java, Jambi, Riau, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and other provinces across the country.(*)O001/HAJM
