Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government is planning to review 8,000 mining licenses it has issued following reports that many of the licenses overlap, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Radjasa said here on Monday.

Citing an example, he said, a company which had obtained an operating license from a regional government could lose the license to another company if the district head or governor in the area was changed. Such a condition could lead to disputes which would have a negative impact on the investment climate in Indonesia.

"According to a report I received recently, 6,000 of a total of 8,000 licenses are overlapped in the field. Therefore, we will form a special team to review the licenses and solve the problem," said the minister.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo said verification and audits on the 8,000 mining licenses were needed to ensure that all mining companies were operating well and in accordance with existing regulations, including regulations on preserving the environment.

The minister also expressed hope that the review would improve coordination among the central and local governments as well as improve the investment climate in Indonesia.
